How to Find or Become a Certified Pickleball Instructor

Many people who want to play pickleball get introduced to the game through a friend. But I'm finding more and more new players looking for pickleball instructors to learn or improve their game. Luckily, there are a number of organizations that certify pickleball coaches and offer certification programs so you can be sure they know how to teach the game properly.

International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association

The International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA) was established in 2015 and founded by Seymour “Rif” Rifkind. Rif was featured on the Pickleball Fire podcast where he talked about the importance of growing the game of pickleball the right way. This included him founding the ITPTA, so a set of standards were set to make sure certified pickleball instructors were teaching the right way.

Currently, there are two main levels of instructor certification that a teacher can achieve through the IPTPA. The first level of certification means you can introduce pickleball players to the game and teach beginners the fundamentals. The second level of certification prepares you to teach beginners and intermediate players. Certification involves a written test, an on-court skills test, and teaching mastery prior to receiving pickleball instructor certifications. Certification workshops are held throughout the country.

Professional Pickleball Registry

Another organization that offers certification for pickleball instructors is the Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR). This group started certifying instructors in 2018 and is the certification partner of the USA Pickleball Association (USAPA).

The organization offers two types of certifications, including the coach certification, which allows you to teach beginners, and the pro certification, which qualifies you to teach any level. Regardless of the level of certification, instructors need to demonstrate competency on the court, during a written exam, and during a teaching session before they can become PPR certified. Eight-hour certification workshops are being held in several locations, including California and Texas, and cost $147.

United States Professional Tennis Association

Yes - the USPTA offers evaluations and certification programs for members wanting pickleball certifications who are currently certified through their organization for tennis. The USPTA has prerequisite requirements including that you must be in good standing and active within their organization as a teacher. If you meet them - this may be an easier way to obtain a pickleball certification.

  • Have met the requirements for the certification process

  • Sessions must be attended in person

  • You must have played a minimum of 5 - 10 times

  • You must own a pickleball paddle and pickleball balls

Pickleball Coaching International

Another online-only option is Pickleball Coaching International (PCI). They offer two tiers of instructor certifications, which can be completed at your own pace. They have non-certification plans available as well to help you grow your skills as a coach until you can become certified and offer liability insurance.

The IPTPA, PPR, PCI, and USPTA offer certification workshops for instructors. As a player, be sure to look for a coach who has met the requirements for one of these organizations. This ensures they have the skill level and expertise to guide you on the pickleball court and prepare you for tournaments.
